A homicide investigation has been launched in West Auckland following the suspicious death of a 29-year-old man last night.

Police said they were called to a house in Aston Pl, Ranui, after reports a man had been taken to Waitakere Hospital with "unexplained injuries". He later died in hospital.

Neighbours said they heard shots around midnight, and saw a car speeding away.

Sandy Whare, who lives nearby, said he believed the dead man was a visitor.

The house was cordoned off this afternoon with an armed police officer guarding the property and a specialist search team at the scene.

An autopsy is planned for later today.

Anyone with information is asked to call Waitakere CIB on 09 839 0600 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
