A West Auckland primary school teacher has been arrested and charged with indecently assaulting his pupils.

The teacher, aged in his 60s, was arrested last week as the result of a "full and thorough" investigation, police said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nadene Richmond, of the Waitemata Police District Child Protection Team, said the man was facing 11 charges of indecent assault.

Heavy suppression orders prevent publication of the man's and the school's name. The children he is accused of offending against are between 5-10-years-old.

Fairfax understands the man will remain on leave while the court process continues.

The school wrote a letter to families advising them of the investigation.

He has been bailed to reappear in the Waitakere District Court next month.
