A man at the centre of an armed police response in Northland has surrendered, but not before shots were fired.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called to the incident which was believed to involve a gun.

Shots were apparently fired, although police were not yet prepared to say how many, or by whom.

One resident reported Pahi Rd in Paroa, Northland, had been blocked off by armed police, and residents were locked in their homes.

Helicopters were also heard overhead.

The resident said up to six shots may have been heard.
