Thirteen-year-old Jordan Nelson has been jailed for 18 years for the murder of his caregiver.

Nelson shot Rosemaree Kurth, 50, his step-grandfather's partner, in the back of her head at their home on Piko Rd, Okoki, North Taranaki, on April 15.

At the time his step-grandfather Kerry Locke was out on the farm tending cattle.

Police arrested Nelson as he drove the family's car along Bayly St in Waitara.

Nelson pleaded guilty to her murder last month.

The sentence was passed down in the High Court at New Plymouth by Justice Paul Heath.
