A man is dead after being struck by a train in Palmerston North this morning.

In a media release, Palmerston North police said the man, aged in his 40s, was on railway tracks below the Gillespies Line overbridge when he was hit by a northbound freight train just after 3am.

It was unclear if he had been walking on the tracks or had fallen from the overbridge.

His identity has not yet been confirmed, but police said they hoped to be able to release details later today.
