A car has rolled 30 metres down a bank into the backyard of a Wellington home.

A 45-year-old man was rescued from his car after missing a bend on Bidwill St, Mt Cook, rolling down the bank and landing in the back section of a property on Anderson Tce, just up the road from Wellington High School.

Police central communications acting shift commander Mark Oliver said it was serious accident, and Bidwill St was closed.

"It's quite nasty, it sounds like. I think he was on Bidwell St and he's rolled down into Anderson Tce it's a bit of a nasty corner there."

Police, ambulance and fire service responded to the crash.

Ambulance staff confirmed the driver was taken to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries.
