A magnitude-3.5 earthquake shook Christchurch this morning, but few residents appear to have noticed.

The tremor greeted Christmas at 8.39am, 30km west of Christchurch at a depth of 10km.

GeoNet described the intensity as moderate.

There were reports of shaking felt as far as Temuka, and people in central Christchurch and Rolleston reported light to moderate shaking.

Social media site Twitter typically lights up with earthquake-related tweets when a quake strikes but there were few tweets after today's tremor.

However, Nathan Kennedy in Rolleston did tweet: "Mother nature gave us a wee quake for Christmas ... First one for ages!"

Jamie Codd tweeted "Anyone for a slice of Christmas quake?"

A 3.1 quake also struck 20km south-east of Christchurch at a depth of 5km at 10.06pm yesterday.

The intensity was described as light.

It was felt as far as Wellington, although light shaking was only felt in Sumner, Mt Pleasant, and parts of Banks Peninsula.
