A Southland youth has died in a motorcycle crash on a farm at Marks Bay in the Chaslands.

The 16-year-old, from Owaka, was riding with two friends at about 7pm when he was unable to stop himself from going over a steep cliff.

He received extensive injuries from the fall, which is estimated to be about 150 metres.

Police said more details would be available once family members had been contacted.
