A 54-year-old woman died in the surf at Mount Maunganui yesterday.

Police said Vivian Fosse Telfar, originally from Norway but living in New Zealand, was swimming at the beach with a group of family and friends when she got into difficulty.

She was found unresponsive and face down in the water about 20 metres off the beach a short time later by a surfer who took her to shore. Efforts to revive her failed.

The matter has been referred to a coroner who will determine the cause of death.
