The Labour Party has overwhelmingly re-elected David Shearer as its leader.

The vote came at a 9am meeting in West Auckland this morning.

"I'm very happy now to be leader of the Labour Party, endorsed. We go forward to hold the Government to account to make sure we get our policies across, so people can see we are a government in waiting," Shearer said.

Under new party rules - adopted under acrimony at last year's annual conference - Shearer needed to be endorsed by more than 60 per cent of MPs. 

Claps and cheers erupted after the announcement of the result.

Shearer said he did not know the exact result of the secret ballot but the result was an overwhelming majority.

Last year he had faced a threat to his leadership when he and David Cunliffe went head to head after the party's conference. Shearer won the support of his MPs, boosting his standing and performance.

New Lynn MP Cunliffe was demoted as finance spokesman following the stoush.

Cunliffe today said he would not comment on the secret ballot.

"We are all moving together from here and we are going to win the election "

Asked about a possible challenge in 2014 he said he had given "absolutely no thought to anything like that".

"David Shearer has my full support and I made that clear at Ratana."
