A toddler has died after being hit by a car in Northland today.

Police said the 18-month-old was struck by a vehicle in a driveway on State Highway 12 in Ohaeawai about 1pm.

Emergency services attended the scene, but the child could not be saved.

The driver of the vehicle was helping with inquiries, police said. An investigation was underway.

Police were in the process of notifying all the toddler's family members.

Meanwhile, a 3-year-old child was seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Otara, South Auckland, this morning.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene on Bairds Rd about 10am.

Inspector Earl McIntosh said the driver involved was in a car described as a dark stationwagon or van.
