One person is dead and two others injured following a two-car collision near the northern Christchurch suburb of Kainga.

The fatal crash occurred on Chaneys Corner and a police spokesman said the surrounding roads would be blocked for up to three hours.

Details of the collision were scarce as emergency services were still at the scene, but the spokesman confirmed one person was killed in the crash and at least two other people had been injured.

It was unknown whether the deceased was a man or a woman.

A police spokesman said a number of people were believed to be injured and one person was being cut from a car.

The two vehicles collided on Chaneys Corner on Main North Rd and firefighters, police and St John ambulance were in attendance.

An ambulance spokesperson said that one of the casualties was in a serious condition while the other had minor injuries.

No other information was available.
