New Zealand cricket has a new heartthrob and this one is set to bowl over his fair share of maidens.

Blackcaps fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan has been called the find of the summer by some cricket commentators for both his refreshing honesty and confidence off the field and damaging deeds in the middle.

But in his role as Mr February for the CLEO Cruiser Bachelor of the Year 2013 he confides that despite all his aggression on the pitch, sometimes he needs the words of Harry Potter to help him sleep.

McClenaghan, 26, who graduated from Auckland University with a commerce degree in marketing and accounting, has done some part-time modelling in the past including advertisements for The Warehouse and a role as an extra on television series Spartacus.

After taking 2-24 against England in Hamilton on Tuesday, McClenaghan now has seven wickets from five T20 internationals.

In a video for the Bachelor of the Year competition, he tells the magazine he does not usually walk around with his top off.

"I guess some of the boys in our team would probably say [I do]."

The best part of his job was getting to play the game he loves, travelling and eating good food, he said.

He explained his role on the field simply. "Basically the captain winds me up, sends me in one direction and says 'please hurt this guy or get them out'.

But how would his teammates describe him?

"On a field, ultra competitive, aggressive, maybe a little crazy sometimes. But off the field they would probably say I'm a little bit more relaxed, like listening to my music and just hanging out and having some good yarns."

He even shares a secret story.

"It's quite embarrassing. I've struggled to sleep since I was a teenager and my mum went out and bought me some Harry Potter tapes. So If I can't sleep I end up putting a Harry Potter tape on and it puts me straight to sleep."

And for those pining for the cricketer, he offers some hints about his ideal woman.

"I'm not really into arrogance at all. I really go for the kind of girls who are beautiful but don't really know it. Just the cute kind of sweetheart kind of girl...a genuinely good person."

Voting for the Cleo Crusier Bachelor of the Year 2013 is underway on the magazine's Facebook page.
