A 16-year-old British girl has left some of the best minds in the world shocked after scoring 161 in an IQ test – earning her a place in Mensa.

Lauren Marbe, from Loughton, Essex, whose interests include tanning, manicures and her blonde highlights, has ranked in the top percentile of minds in the world, according to The Telegraph.

She has been compared with Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein and Bill Gates who are all said to have intelligence quotient of 160 – although none of those established geniuses ever took an IQ test.

Experts believed Einstein and Hawking's IQ's to be around the 160 mark, but conceded IQ tests were an inexact science.

Marbe, the daughter of a cab driver, is on track to gain A and A+ marks in her GCSEs (standard exams for students aged 14-16).

Her teachers reportedly told her they knew she was smart, "but didn't realise you were that smart".

Her parents were also apparently surprised at the result.

Marbe said many people did have a pre-conceived notion about her, based mainly on her looks.

"I am blonde, I do wear make-up and I do go out," she said.

"I love my fake tan and fake nails as well so I guess I am a bit of an Essex girl in that sense. I watch TOWIE [The Only Way is Essex] and I love the programme, it's addictive but now most people do seem to think that's what everyone in Essex is like.

"I love living in Essex and I'm glad that I might be able to show people that we aren't all ditzy and blonde."

Marbe attends Roding Valley High School in Loughton, and took the Mensa-accredited IQ test earlier this month along with other high achievers at her school.

Marbe has now been enrolled in Mensa, which means she is officially in the top 1 per cent of cleverest people in the world.

But her ambitions lie outside the world of academia. Marbe hopes to be a West End theatre performer when she graduates.
