A man has received "several" stab wounds to his buttocks after a domestic dispute in Masterton, police say.

The 48-year-old is now in Wairarapa Hospital after being stabbed with a knife just after 9.15pm last night.

His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said a 23-year-old man, who was known to the victim, has been arrested.

He said the alleged incident occurred after an argument on the "east side of Masterton" but he would not give further details.

The arrested man has been charged with assault with a weapon.

It is not known when he will appear in court.
