An Australian man who let his toddler steer his car as he drove down a suburban street has been dubbed "absolutely stupid" by police.

A one-minute clip of the joyride was posted to YouTube, showing the child playing with the wheel while sitting on a man's lap, according to Australian talkback show 3AW.

Occasionally, the man lets go of the wheel and lets the child steer solo.

Acting Inspector Tim O'Conner, from the Melbourne area where the film was allegedly taken, said the adult driver is putting the child's life at risk, as well as other drivers.

"It is just absolute stupidity," he said.

"It didn't appear the child was wearing a seatbelt, you've got the possibility of an airbag going off - and we know how dangerous they can be to the people sitting in the seats - and also just the fact that it is a danger to other road users," he said.

Police told 3AW the man could face a number of traffic offences.

"It is really a matter of sitting down and going through it (the video) again and make sure we cover everything off," said O'Conner.

The YouTube clip has since been removed.
