Police have named the Australian soldier who died after being struck by a truck and trailer near Burnham.

He was Duncan John Orr, 31, a resident of Victoria, Australia.

Orr was hit while walking on State Highway 1 on February 16.

He was in New Zealand on a two-week exchange exercise with the New Zealand Army.

Orr was off-duty at the time of the crash.

Police said inquiries were continuing into the cause of the crash.

Orr was a member of the Gippsland Kart Club.

According to the club's webpage, Orr was a soldier with the Australian Army Reserve.

He also participated in local theatre productions, played with the Traralgon City Band and was active with the Traralgon Harriers Running Club, it said.

His funeral will be held on Friday at St Michaels Church in Traralgon, it said.

A death notice published by the Herald Sun said Orr was a "dearly loved and loving" husband, son, uncle, brother and brother-in law.
