A burning exercise
There's nothing like a burning house to get the adrenalin rush going for firefighters during a crucial training experience.
Crews from around Auckland descended on Taha Rd, Waimauku to battle the controlled fire in a dilapidated three-bedroom kauri weatherboard house.
Different crews of firefighters went from room to room getting close to the flames, practising various techniques and equipment.
"It's quite rare to do this but it's very educational," organiser Kumeu senior station officer Simon Shields says.
He says it's good experience, especially for the new recruits.
"We burnt a double bed in there and filled every room with old furniture. It took two days to finish the burn-off due to high winds."
