Norwest News briefs
Can you put a smile on a family's face with your donated Christmas gifts?
The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal runs until December 24 and will support Henderson families in need this festive season.
The 19th event encourages nor-west residents to simply choose a gift that's suitable for the recipient's gender and age and then place it under the trees at a nearby Kmart store with the Salvation Army helping distribute them.
Last year Henderson residents collectively donated over 3000 gifts.
Christine Rose, a Muriwai Environmental Action Community trustee, is the guest speaker tomorrow night for an annual fundraiser of Sea Shepherd New Zealand.
Proceeds will go towards supporting the organisation's 10th campaign to stop illegal whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Master of Ceremonies is Te Radar with Sea Shepherd captain Peter Hammarstedt talking at the event at galatos live from 7.30pm to 11pm.
Music is presented by Tama Waipara and HopeToun Brown with a performance by Jahra Rager and Ash Graham. Visit seashepherdnzfundraiser.org.nz for more information.
Oil Free Seas Flotilla
Mrs Rose is also encouraging nor-west residents to support the Oil Free Seas flotilla at their favourite North Island West coast beach on November 23 at midday.
The Texan oil driller Anadarko is about to begin high risk deep sea oil drilling in the Tasman Sea near Raglan and the flotilla is there to oppose them.
People can bring banners and join the group making a ''Stop deep sea oil'' message to Anadarko.
