Back from a music recording trip in the United States, Gulf Harbour’s Kelly Rose finished her first album and is on to the next.

Kelly, 17, returned from a trip to Asheville, North Carolina, where she spent three weeks with her dad Darryl and Infinity Music producer Anthony Brown.

During the trip Kelly finished writing and singing 12 new songs before getting flu in the second week, halting recording because she lost her voice.

Unfortunately, the flu stuck with her for longer than expected and they had to return with some work incomplete. Anthony has made the trip to finish the job.

"While over in the US we would go into the studio in the afternoon and work on lyrics and music," says Kelly.

"Often the team would have backing music ready and sometimes had some lyrics, and so did I. We just rearranged songs and filled them out."

Producer Anthony says there was a bit of pressure from the amount they wanted to get done.

"But the chemistry between us is good so we could work freely. It was very productive."

The team is now writing 10 songs for the second album in New Zealand.

"From here we are arranging meetings with major labels and are looking to find who can offer us the best set-up," says Anthony.

"We would like to release the album internationally but we have to generate a buzz by radio release first."

Darryl and Kelly will also be working on a submission for New Zealand On Air funding to help them make their first music video.

"We just have to pick a single to submit," says Darryl.

Kelly is in year 13 at Orewa College and has to play catch-up after missing out on school during the trip.

"The plan is to finish school this year, but if the opportunity comes up to take music as a career path I will take it. Catching up with homework in the meantime is hard."

Kelly is in the line- up for the TV3 telethon in August. She is also booked to perform at the Girl’s Day Out, and has already had a variety of interviews on TVNZ’s Good Morning show, Times FM and Mai FM.
