The Maygrove Village Sports Club combined the Melbourne Cup day with a fundraiser for the local St John ambulance.
The day started with a fancy hat competition judged by Steve Cope and Yvonne Cox from Hibiscus Coast Order of St John.
Gweneth Fitzpatrick won the women’s prize donated by Abstrax Hair Design, while Graeme Mayo won the men’s prize donated by Waiwera Pools.
A mystery draw was well supported by residents and staff.
Prizes were donated by local businesses New World, Countdown, Orewa Paper Plus, Orewa Care Chemist, Waiwera Pools, Silver-dale RSA, Berkeley Theatre, Sharks Sport Club, Hola Restaurant, Cadbury, and Maurine Boyd – a resident who donated two knitted dolls.
An auction included a helicopter ride for the highest bidder and four guests, donated by Leigh Hopper.
Auctioneer Ross Paterson turned this into a very exciting event, with two residents left battling it out. Jack Ellis won it for $466.
The Maygrove Residents Committee donated a further $200 on behalf of all the residents, and with the donation from the sports club the grand total was $1247, presented to Steve and Yvonne.
The day was a great success, says co-ordinator Raewyn Wootton who thanks all those involved.
