A novel way to raise funds for improved teaching facilities has been established by Hibiscus Coast Kindergarten.
Parents helped principal Chris Collins and her staff of five host a dinner for 40 or so Orewa Rotary Club members.
A tradition of the club holding one of its weekly meetings at the school once a year began four years ago.
The $1000 that the Rotarians pay for the barbecue meal pays for educational extras such as more sophisticated computer programmes.
"About 20 families are involved," Chris says. "The mums bring the salads and desserts and the dads help the Rotarians man the barbecues. This extra cash has been a wonderful bonus for us over the years and, thanks to last week's evening, we're now looking forward to buying a digital camera as well as upgraded computer programmes."
Orewa Rotary president James Murray says: "It's an all-round win-win situation.
"We get to enjoy a change of venue, which is good once in a while, and also help boost the children's education."
