Wall saves house from flames
The rare addition of a fire wall blocked flames threatening to engulf an Albany home, a firefighter says.
Three fire engines arrived at the large single storey home in Schnapper Rock Rd on October 22 about 3.15pm.
A locked security gate blocked access to the property, forcing firefighters to run hoses through the gate and down the long driveway to combat the flames.
The blaze appears to have started in the garage, Devonport fire station officer Greg Booker says.
"There is extensive damage to the garage and smoke damage to the house, but the fire wall stopped it from spreading.
"It is pretty unusual to have a fire wall, although it's probably because the garage was added as an extension to the original house."
No-one was home at the time and firefighters were still trying to locate the owners.
Traffic along Schnapper Rock Rd was reduced to one lane outside the home until later that evening.
A Vector electrical worker isolated power to the property while fire safety officers investigated the cause of the blaze.
