Santas take over town

HO,HO,HO: Destination Orewa Beach’s Hellen Hyndman, right, and Gayle Hill are putting up Santas around town.

A big surfing Santa leads the way for festive season decor.

Santa will be on a jetski, surfboard, and cooking on a barbecue around Orewa from next week.

He will be joined with more Christmas cheer from wreaths hung from street lamp posts by Destination Orewa Beach from November 22.

The 2.7-metre tall Santas have come from the Takapuna Beach Business Association, which has updated its own decorations.

"The themes perfectly complement the Orewa Beach image," Destination Orewa Beach's Hellen Hyndman says.

Empty retail shops will become temporary art galleries with art created by Red Beach School and Murrays Bay Intermediate students.

Painted work depicting Orewa with pohutukawa, beach scenes and ocean themes will be hung from mid-December.

The art will be displayed at the former Art of Artisans building on Tamariki Ave before moving periodically through the town centre.
