Construction workers have been labouring away on the groundwork for Devonport's new $7.8 million library.
The old library was torn down in March this year and the new two-storey replacement is scheduled to be built by December.
A fit-out will follow, with the library opening its doors to the public early next year.
Library goers this time next year will be able to enjoy seaside views in the lounge and dedicated children's reading and study spaces.
Judy Millar, an artist with childhood connections to Devonport, will work with building designers Athfield Architects and Auckland Council to decorate the library with artworks.
A temporary library with limited services is open across the street at 3 Victoria Rd until the new library opens.
