A proposal to upgrade the speed limit on Esmonde Rd has been approved by the Takapuna Community Board.

The board has endorsed the proposal by North Shore City Council officers to change it from 50kmh to 60kmh.

This will cover the section from the traffic signals at Harbourside Church to the signals at Akoranga Drive.

A study was recently conducted to determine the appropriate speed for vehicles using this section of Esmonde Rd.

The review was prompted by the road's recent upgrade which warrants an increase in the maximum speed for motorists.

Council senior traffic engineer Karthi Govindasamy says there are no residential properties between the church and Akoranga Drive.

He says based on the criteria for setting speed limits, 60kmh is considered appropriate for this section of Esmonde Rd.

The 50kmh speed limit will remain on the stretch from Lake Rd to the church and the whole length of Akoranga Drive.

Mr Govindasamy says the board's endorsement will be included in a report for approval by the council.

He says they are also consulting with the Automobile Association, New Zealand Transport Agency, NZ Road Transport Association and the police.

Once passed and gazetted, new signs will be installed advising motorists of the revised speed limit.
