The New Zealand Transport Agency is doing resurfacing work on the northern motorway.

The upgrade which started on Sunday covers the stretch from Oteha Valley Rd on the North Shore to the Orewa interchange.

The agency says work will be carried out at night between 8pm and 6am when traffic volumes are light and there is least disruption to motorists.

Resurfacing is expected to take about four weeks depending on the weather and there will be closures to both northbound and southbound lanes.

The agency is advising motorists to take extra care when passing through the work site and keep within the signposted speed limit.

Speed will be restricted round the clock during the work period, with the night-time speed limit at 30kmh and the daytime limit at 30kmh to 50kmh.

The agency says this is to ensure the safety of workers and make sure the road surface settles properly.
