Surf Life Saving Northern Region is kicking off its BeachEd and Surf to School education programmes this summer.

The community programmes aim to teach kids in schools the skills and knowledge to keep them safe at the
beach.

"Our programmes are key to preventing drowning in the community," says chief executive officer Steve Johns.

BeachEd involves a full day at the beach with surf lifeguards teaching students the tips and tricks to stay out of trouble in the surf.

Kids get to apply their learning with water activities at the end of the day.

Surf to School takes the surf safety lesson directly to the school, teaching kids safety ideas at the school grounds.

Learning is reinforced with demonstrations of surf life saving equipment as well as other beach games.

The summer programmes will cover surf life saving clubs from Raglan to North Piha, and Mairangi Bay to Ruakaka and many more in between.
