It may be pure fun and entertainment for the audience, but for this young Merlin, magic is a serious business.
Not only does Mark Robinson make seamless magic a point in all his performances, he also aims to make it a lucrative career.
"It's going to be a career for me," says the 19-year-old Murrays Bay resident.
What drives him is his dream of hitting the bigtime in Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the United States, and becoming a celebrity magician.
Mark has performed magic since he was eight, and has been wowing audiences with his bag of tricks for 11 years now.
He also represented North Shore at an international convention of magicians held in Australia several years ago.
He will be appearing in Shore is Magic, a comedy show for the family at the Rose Theatre in Belmont this weekend.
The highlight of his magic act is fast-paced sleight-of-hand with live doves.
"People really enjoy manipulation acts because they can appreciate the skill it takes," Mark says.
For now Mark works as a technician, servicing cash registers in Auckland city.
He is also an animal lover.
Mark says he loves entertaining people.
"It boosts your self-confidence and makes you achieve your goals in life. That's real magic," he says.
Shore City Magicians Club president Mick Peck says Mark is exceptionally talented and has won several awards in competition with other magicians from New Zealand.
"Mark's act is fantastic. There are very few magicians in this country who have the skill to perform a manipulation act like he does," Mr Peck says.
The magicians club was founded in 1974 to encourage the art and traditions of magic and allied entertainment, with a focus on fostering youth.
