A 20th birthday celebration might just be the special occasion to crack open a 20-year-old bottle of port.

On September 14 the North Shore Wine and Food Society celebrates its 20th birthday and president David Corlett says it will be just that little bit special.

There will be a three-course meal with plenty of good wine to sample.

Mr Corlett has been with the club for six years and has been president for nearly five.

It has a good following, with around 60 members. Between 40 and 50 attend on a regular basis.

Over the years the core principle of the club hasn't changed, he says.

The North Shore Wine and Food Society is a club of people who enjoy wine and appreciate the opportunity to taste and learn more about wines you wouldn't typically find in the supermarket, he says.

There is always a guest speaker and Mr Corlett says they have their speakers booked until the end of next year.

He says the club is as much about the people as it is the wines.

"That's why they keep coming back," he says.

The club meets at the Fairway Lodge in Glenfield on the second Tuesday of each month.
