It's hoped new overnight liquor bans for Torbay and Mairangi Bay will curb youth drinking in public.
The bans, which have been supported by the East Coast Bays Community Board, were passed by the North Shore City Council on August 22.
They will come into force on September 17 and be effective from 10pm to 6am during daylight saving and 9pm to 6am the rest of the year.
The request for the bans first came from Carole McMinn on behalf of the Torbay and Mairangi Bay Business Associations, with support from residents and the police.
The ban will cover the Torbay CBD, Rock Isle Rd, Gray Cres, Cliff Rd cul-de-sac and Beach Rd from the Torbay shops down to Long Bay Beach, including the carpark in front of the Marine Education and Recreation Centre and the Anglican Retreat Centre. In Mairangi Bay, the ban will extend a liquor ban covering the playground by the beach to include the whole of the business area including Montrose Tce and Sidmouth St carparks to the beach.
Browns Bay community constable Paul Donaldson says the bans give police another tool to use to deal with drinking in suburbia.
