Police search the scene and talk to neighbours after a man was stabbed in Birkenhead.

Police believe the attacker of a 25-year-old man, now fighting for his life in hospital, is known to him.

The man is in an induced coma after he was stabbed with a large knife in his upper right thigh last night outside a Birkenhead house.

He was rushed to Auckland Hospital for immediate surgery where he remains in a serious condition.

Police say the attack happened during a fight between two men at around 7pm last night in Palmerston Rd.

North Shore Police detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby says the offender has not yet been found, but they are following strong leads and expect to have someone in custody by later today.

Forensic teams are at the scene and police are speaking to neighbours and associates of the offender.

"It is not a public safety issue. We do not have a guy running around stabbing people at random.

"We do believe he is known to the victim," Mr Libby says.

The victim is expected to survive, but he is not yet in a condition to speak to police, Mr Libby says.
