Police have arrested and charged a man after a brutal stabbing in Birkenhead left another fighting for his life in Auckland City Hospital.
A 36-year-old unemployed Auckland man appeared in the North Shore District Court on December 15 charged with common assault.
Police say they have not ruled out laying further charges.
The 25-year-old injured man remains in a critical condition after he was stabbed with a large knife in his upper right thigh during a fight outside a home in Palmerston Rd at around 7pm on December 13.
