Police have arrested and charged a man after a brutal stabbing in Birkenhead left another fighting for his life in Auckland City Hospital.

A 36-year-old unemployed Auckland man appeared in the North Shore District Court on December 15 charged with common assault.

Police say they have not ruled out laying further charges.

The 25-year-old injured man remains in a critical condition after he was stabbed with a large knife in his upper right thigh during a fight outside a home in Palmerston Rd at around 7pm on December 13.

Police say the man had immediate surgery and was placed in an induced coma to recover from his injuries.

Forensic teams have carried out investigations of the scene and police say enquiries into the circumstances of the stabbing will continue.

North Shore Police detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby says the injured man is not yet in a condition to speak with police.
