'Lucky' escape for occupants
The occupants of a Bayview home that caught fire were lucky to escape unharmed, a fire fighter says.
The home in Leigh Terrace caught alight at around 1.30pm yesterday.
A neighbour who noticed the smoke dialled 111 and three fire trucks were soon dispatched to the scene.
Birkenhead Fire station officer John Leonard says it took three hours to contain the blaze which had spread from the basement into the living room and roof.
Fire investigators have concluded the cause is "undetermined", but possibly occurred as a result of careless cigarette disposal, Mr Leonard says.
The damage was largely contained to the basement, but the outside deck and ranchslider has also been affected.
Mr Leonard says he was not aware that the home had working smoke alarms, but the home is insured.
