A man is in a critical condition after being beaten up outside a North Shore toilet block last night.

The 40-year-old West Auckland man was found on Lake Rd, Belmont - the main road down to Devonport - about 8.30pm.

He was taken to Auckland City Hospital and is expected to undergo surgery later today or tomorrow morning.

Senior Sergeant Grant Tetzlaff said it was not clear why the man was in the area or what the motive for the attack was, but a scene examination was expected to be completed by the end of the day.

Tetzlaff said police had already spoken to some witnesses but were keen to hear from anyone who had driven along the busy road and seen anything after 8pm.

The area where the attack took place was generally affluent and such an incident was "out of the ordinary for down there".

Anyone with information about the attack should contact North Shore police on 09 488 6200 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
