Safety under scrutiny
Drivers are being urged to slow down around schools now students are back.
North Shore police will conduct an intensive road policing operation over the next few weeks to ensure students get to and from school safely.
Senior Sergeant Grant Tetzlaff says there are many children who are new to school or have forgotten road safety skills.
He says it is important to note the 40kmh speed limit around some schools and the 20kmh limit when passing a school bus.
"Our children are more vulnerable at this time of the year.
"A child's ability to interpret the speed of an oncoming car, the distance of a vehicle or the potential danger is not as developed as an adult's."
He says parents driving children to school must park safely and children riding bikes must wear a helmet.
He said police would speak to parents who drop off children in unsafe areas.
