Runaway boat in the fast lane
Rubber neckers were treated to a bizarre sight when a boat was inadvertently launched on the Northern Motorway.
Police closed two lanes 400m north of the Esmonde Rd onramp between 11.10am and 12.25pm on Wednesday while they cleared the scene.
Auckland Motorways traffic safety Sergeant Pete Smith says the five metre fibreglass cabin cruiser had just been purchased by the driver who was returning home on the North Shore.
"The boat has become detached from the trailer due to securing hook and chain failing. Probably because of age and wear."
A driver who passed the stranded boat posted a picture on Facebook with the line; "mate think ya launched it a bit early tide's not in yet".
No one was injured and there was no damage to any other property aside from the boat itself, he says.
The owner has been issued with an infringement notice.
