A young boy was found wandering the streets of Takapuna at 4am by a member of the public.
The boy, aged about 3 to 4, knows no English and speaks an unknown language. He is possibly of Asian descent, police said.
He was found on Lake Rd, Takapuna wearing jeans, a blue sweatshirt, and socks but no shoes.
"We have no idea where he came from or who he is," said Chief Inspector Andy Brill.
The boy spent the morning at the North Shore Policing Centre and is now in the care of Child Youth and Family.
Police were asking the public to contact Child Youth and Family on 0800 FAMILY with any information.
