Fine art on the block at college fundraiser
Northcote College's annual Affair of the Heart art sale has been given a boost with internationally renowned artists donating their work.
Former student Michael Parekowhai has donated a signed limited edition screen print of Spaceman Cigarette, one of 70 limited editions he produced for the 2011 Venice Biennale.
The print will be auctioned during the Affair of the Heart gala night on March 1 when the work of 120 local and national artists will open for viewing and sale in the Northcote College hall.
Mr Parekowhai, an artist and sculptor based in Pt Chevalier, is regarded as one of New Zealand's most prominent contemporary artists.
His work is held in all significant public and private collections throughout New Zealand and Australia, in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe.
His Spaceman Cigarette screen prints are the first screen-printed works that he has produced for 20 years.
He is a a professor of fine arts at Elam, where he is passing his artistic talents and the importance of self-belief on to today's young art students.
This year is the ninth annual Affair of the Heart art event. It is Northcote College's sole fundraising event. During the weekend of March 1 to 3 works from across all media will be for sale.
