Katy Bond was "overwhelmed" to find out she had been accepted to prestigious Cambridge University.

Then she learned she had won a full scholarship as well.

Miss Bond, who lives in Murrays Bay, says she is absolutely thrilled.

"You really don't expect it to happen to you. It's just one of those things, if you don't apply you don't have a chance."

The 24-year-old cried when she was awarded the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Prince of Wales Scholarship.

It means she can pursue her dream of becoming a professor.

Miss Bond completed her art history masters at the University of Auckland.

She will spend the next three years working on her PhD in 16th century costume design, supervised by one of her favourite authors, Ulinka Rublack.

"I used her book a lot when I was writing my masters so it's really cool that I get to work alongside her," says Miss Bond. She flies to Britain in September.
