A burst water main in Northcote was mistaken for a water spout by one witness.
''I thought it was a tornado. It looked like a huge fountain,'' he says.
The water has been gushing out of a hole in the corner of Greenslade Reserve on Lake Rd, Northcote since about 7.30am.
Another witness says he thought he was in Rotorua.
''Just the power of it is pretty impressive. You can see all the bollards out just from the pressure.''
He says it was ''shocking'' and estimates it was 30 metres high.
''I was worried about the house next door, it was pretty flooded.''
A woman at a nearby shop says she arrived at work at 9.20am and the water main was still gushing out water.
Li Cheng from Blissful Health and Vegetarian says her shop was far enough away not to have been flooded.
She says traffic is still flowing ok along Lake Rd.
