A state house in Browns Bay has been empty for more than five months and neighbours want to know why.
The previous tenant lived in the house on John Downs Drive for 34 years before she died in April.
Julie Somerville lives nearby and says she cannot believe it is still empty.
"It's such a shame. You read about it all the time, people wanting houses.
"People sleep under bridges and all sorts," Ms Somerville says.
Another resident, Anne Tomlinson, says it is a nice house and section.
"My concern is just wondering what's going to happen with it."
Housing New Zealand (HNZ) also owns the house next door.
Asset development manager Sean Bignell says no decisions have been made but HNZ is considering redevelopment.
"The current properties on site are old and can be replaced with better quality housing. It makes sense to consider using the land more wisely to provide more homes for people in need."
The current option is to replace the two houses with three larger houses.
In June the North Shore Times reported another empty HNZ house in Stanaway St, Hillcrest.
A resident said it was a waste amid Auckland's housing crisis.
