Lucky escape for van driver
A courier driver had a lucky escape on Auckland's North Shore when his vehicle tipped into a deep stormwater culvert.
The middle aged man was the only occupant and escaped unharmed late this morning.
His vehicle tipped on its side and its windscreen is smashed. A tow truck with a small crane is trying to lift it from the culvert.
The sound of the accident startled nearby workers. ''I heard a big bang... and said to the girls it sounded like thunder,'' said one woman.
North Shore police constable Simon Colbert says: ''It looks a lot worse than it is ''.
He says the accident in Target Rd, Glenfield appears to have been caused by a lack of concentration but an investigation is taking place into the cause.
Nearby workers say another courier driver walked away unscathed after a similar accident several years ago and it prompted the council to install a shoulder high fence.
