Women target handbags of elderly in centres

Three women are allegedly working together to distract victims and snatch their handbags.

Police are urging people to be "extra wary" after a series of handbag thefts, mostly in the main shopping centres of Takapuna, Albany, Glenfield and Browns Bay.

North Shore area commander Inspector Shanan Gray says police are investigating several thefts involving three women.

Two of the women distract the victim by asking for directions or complimenting them on their clothing, while the the third steals the person's wallet or handbag.

The trio has been seen getting into a car similar to a burgundy, three-door Toyota RAV4.

Mr Gray says the women appear to be opportunistic thieves who are targeting the elderly.

"If you get approached by this group, don't speak to them, keep your personal belongings close to you and walk away."

He encourages people to contact police if they are approached by the trio.

"We're doing everything we can to stop these offenders but we'd urge the public to keep an eye out for this type of behaviour."
