HELPING HAND: Stanley Bay School principal Glen Vinton with navy officers who came to the school’s aid.

The navy has pitched in to help a school postpone its biggest fundraiser.

The Stanley Bay School Grand Garage Sale and Summer Fair was rescheduled to avoid bad weather brought on by Cyclone Lusi.

The navy moved boxes filled with thousands of donations so the classrooms they had been stored in can be used over the next couple of weeks.

The event will now be held on March 29, which is also the Navy Open Day.

Everything from toys and books to designer clothing and silverware has been donated to the garage sale.

Principal Glen Vinton says it is great for the students to see firsthand recycling in such a positive manner and on such a grand scale.

"The children love the opportunity to get new toys and books for next to nothing, and to see the items they have outgrown being passed onto new families to enjoy," Ms Vinton says.

For the first time this year the summer fair will have a petting zoo, Newfoundland dogs giving small children rides and hot rod cars. The Grand Garage Sale and Summer Fair is at noon to 4pm on March 29 at Stanley Bay School, 15 Russell St, Devonport.
