On Saturday, November 28, from 8.30am to 1pm the Fire Service and food banks from Kaeo, Kerikeri, Paihia and Kawakawa will join arms and get out on the streets for their annual Christmas Street Appeal. This is to help families who need assistance during the Christmas period.
"We are appealing to households in each of the communities to donate at least one item of non perishable goods, either tinned or packet goods in order for this drive to be successful," says co-ordinator Judy Te Whiu.
"I am aware of many struggling families throughout the North who can’t afford to celebrate Christmas, because the budget doesn’t cater for extras.
"I am sure that this is one way we can make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. No matter how small the gesture, it’s done with thoughtfulness and kindness. I strongly believe that as we invest in our communities, we bring a little ray of hope everywhere. I encourage communities to get behind their local food bank and Fire Service this year by giving generously when the fire truck calls at your street.
"On November 28 the trucks will cover most streets in each town, so listen for the siren. People may bring their donations to the truck or leave donations by a letter box or somewhere visible to collectors. Alternatively, donations can be dropped off at fire stations in Kaeo, Kerikeri, Paihia and Kawakawa.
"I have been the co-ordinator of this appeal for two years and have seen the generosity of people everywhere, as they have given to others less fortunate than themselves. This year Kaeo and Kerikeri join in the appeal and I am encouraged by this. I hope that next year other towns will join us," she says.
