A blessing of the ship and crew of one of the newest Royal New Zealand Navy vessels the Taupo was held in Whangarei last week.

Attendees included local kaumatua and kaumatua representing the navy, Bert McLean, and Bruce Puke Puke, both ex-naval men.

Whangarei mayor Stan Semenoff and Northland Regional Council chairman Mark Farnsworth also in attended with several veteran ex-servicemen.

The local kohanga reo from Onerahi kept the crew and visitors entertained with beautiful songs.

The ship will be undergoing extensive sea trials over the next month.

The Taupo was built in Whangarei, her home port.
