THE VISION for Focus Paihia has taken a step forward with the formation of a community trust.

Five interim trustees and an interim general manager have been appointed to the charitable trust to get the ball rolling.

"This is the beginning of significant times for Paihia," says interim general manager Tania McInnes.

"With the coming together of a number of local organisations, we are now paving the way forward for a more cohesive and prosperous community. I believe we are at the brink of some dynamic changes in the way we operate. The trust provides a platform from which we can achieve this in a professional and ethical manner."

Over the next year, the trust aims to form a clear strategic plan, build strong relationships with key stakeholders and work on a number of local projects. One of the immediate goals is identifying a theme or design for Paihia.

The trust also plans to work with local operators to upskill service staff for the coming season.

"The aim is to take the information already collected from work completed last year and to continue to work alongside the community to develop protocols with which Paihia can thrive, without having any adverse effects on the natural environment – the main reason we live here and tourists visit," says interim chairman Grant Harnish.

Focus Paihia has support from the Far North District Council as a major stakeholder. Mayor Wayne Brown has congratulated the group, acknowledging the work that has been achieved to date through the combined efforts of different organisations and individuals.

The interim trust is to be replaced by November by seven nominees from five organisations including Business Paihia, Paihia and Districts Ratepayers Association, local iwi, Paihia Haven of History and the Paihia School Board of Trustees.

The nominees will then take on the responsibility of driving the campaign.
