Kerikeri flautist Bree'annah McBain has been invited by Kings College to apply for a two year music scholarship to board at the school in Auckland, in recognition of her outstanding potential.
Flute tutor Clare Penny says Bree is a specially talented young musician. "It is unusual for someone this young to be making ripples in the intensely competitive classical music world."
Bree began the year in style when she was publicly acknowledged by Catherine Bowie, first flute of the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, as the youngest member of the APO's Summer School Fellowship Orchestra.
Surrounded by peers studying music at university, or in their final years of school, 14-year-old Bree took part in masterclasses and played in the orchestra's concert. Bree will sit grade 8 flute in the next few months, less than five years after starting flute tuition.
