Retired Kaipara lawyer Clive Boonham is a local hero.

He was one of seven Northlanders who received the Local Hero honour in the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards.

A national winner will be announced in February.

Mr Boonham has championed the legal and moral rights of all Kaipara District ratepayers, and in particular Mangawhai residents.

Other heroes to receive recognition include Milan Ruka, of Whangarei, who has done a great service to the region through the simple act of paddling up local rivers and filming what he sees.

Capturing images of cows grazing on unfenced river banks, dead cows and streams fouled by the run-off from over-stocked farms, the 61-year-old hopes to prompt enforcement action and inspire other New Zealanders.

Helen McGregor (Tikipunga), Terry O'Meara (Ruakaka), Pat Cherrington, James Bidois and Derry Godbert Kerikeri) were also recognised this year.

The awards are part of the national Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards.

A total of 180 unsung heroes across the country have been recognised for their efforts with the Local Hero Awards.
